Chapter and Individual Awards

Each year at our Founders' Day Celebration event we present local awards unique to St. Louis Alumnae Chapter to alumnae for distinguished service. St. louis alumnae are also eligible for the international Merit, Service, and Loyalty awards, as well as coveted recognitions like the Honor Roll, Carnation Award, and Philanthropist Award.

In addition to individual awards, our chapter has a rich history of winning chapter awards at Convention.

Below is more information on our annual awards, prior award winners, and past Convention awards. We are proud of all individuals and the chapter for our rich history of award winners!

Annual Founders' Day Awards

Love, Labor, Learning, and Loyalty Award
(formerly known as the Elizabeth Wood Mize Award)

Established in 1977, this award is presented annually to an alumna who has given outstanding service to St. Louis Alumnae Chapter.

Elizabeth Wood Mize was initiated in 1919 at Phi Chapter at Washington University in St. Louis. She served as alumnae chapter president from 1930-1931. In 1977 she donated a silver tray to establish this award. In 2000, alumna Ann Harris Straw (1962 initiate of Epsilon Chapter and alumnae chapter president from 2002-2006) donated a new silver tray for the new millennium. The trays were engraved and passed on each year to the new award recipient. As of 2022 both trays are retired, and the new award is a gold necklace passed down annually to the new recipient.

Past Award Winners

Eleanor Hemminger Award

Established in 1995, this award is presented annually to an alumna that has worked diligently to promote, assist and help the Gamma Tau chapter. The recipient is selected by collegiate members of Gamma Tau Chapter.

Eleanor Garm Hemminger was initiated in 1931 at Epsilon Chapter at Northwestern University. She was a devoted lifetime volunteer who, among many other accolades and roles, was active in the founding of Gamma Tau in 1967. She donated her badge to be used by the president of Gamma Tau Chapter, and was the chapter's first House Corporation Board president. She also served as alumnae chapter president from 1956-1957. Eleanor was gifted a silver tray for her years of service to Gamma Phi Beta, and she later donated it to establish this award. The tray is now "retired" and replaced by a silver bowl which is engraved and passed on each year to the new award recipient.

Past Award Winners

Lumpp Henderson Award

Established in 1997, this award is presented annually to a collegian or alumna who has made a significant impact on alumnae-collegiate relations in St. Louis.

Virginia Smith Lumpp was an initiate of Phi Chapter at Washington University in St. Louis, and served as alumnae chapter president from 1957-1958. Patricia "Patsy" McGahey Henderson is a 1959 initiate of Phi Chapter who served as alumnae chapter president from 1970-1971. Virginia gave Patsy a custom piece of jewelry, and years later Patsy donated it to establish this award. The necklace is passed on each year to the new award recipient.
